So What is Henley Regatta?
The Henley Royal Regatta is the biggest and oldest regatta in the world and runs for 5 days (Wednesday 28th June to July 2nd 2006). About 100,000 people attend each day on Friday/Saturday/Sunday. There are excellent extra trains laid on for the week.
There is racing every day from 9:00am till 7:00pm with a luncheon and afternoon tea break. The racing is 2 lane and is basically a knock out type event. I have seen crews from South Africa turn up and get disqualified for being 30 seconds late on start of first race!!!!. Clubs come from Oz, NZ, Japan, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, France, Ireland, South Africa, occasionally India, Russia, Poland, the UK and the new colonies (US and Canada). US and Canadian schools are the biggest group of overseas visitors, and its always good to see Haaarvaaard and Yale race each other then get beaten by Oxford or Cambridge. There is usually one or two national level crews that race on the Sunday afternoon in the Final of the Grand Challenge Cup (15:00). Racing on Sunday is from 12 5:00 with prize giving at 17:30.
The course itself is a mile long (see picture on http://www.londonhash.org/hrrh3/runlist/hrrh3list.html ) and much of the course is lined with hospitality tents. Along the last 1/3 mile on the south bank (Berkshire) much access to river is restricted (Stewards Enclosure) where die hard fans dress up in blazers, boaters, and women in dresses to below their knees and drink champagne and pimms till they fall over. There are several bars and picnic areas all along the course. There are also several jazz bands at bars, the best of these is the Barn Bar which is about 1/3 way down course from the start (2/3 way down course from bridge on south bank). You can also picnic anywhere you find an open and unreserved place, but probably best is near barn bar. There are many outlets selling food and booze as well.
On Saturday evening there is a fireworks display at 21:00 in Fawley Meadows, which is probably best seen from the Regatta Enclosure, which is open for free for this display. All the river fills up with boats having parties for this event (weather permitting).
